Peter Radcliffe

IN MEMORIAM

In Loving Memory of Peter Radcliffe (16th January 1970 – 27th October 2025)

Musician, Monk, Tutor, Monastery Liaison, Studio Manager

Peter Radcliffe was a gifted musician, producer, and teacher whose life bridged music, spirituality, and human connection. A man of deep thought and infectious, irreverent humour, Peter’s journey carried him from the concert stage to the monastery, from the recording studio to the classroom, and always, towards understanding and compassion.

Born with an ear for rhythm and a love for sound, Peter mastered drums, piano, and tuned percussion at an early age. His musical path led him across the world as a professional session musician, performing, recording and engineering with artists such as Iggy Pop, Marc Almond, Adam Ant, and Tim Arnold – most notably as the drummer on Arnold’s BBC Radio London Album of The Year The Soho Hobo’ in 2015. He became an integral member of the renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra, touring extensively across Europe, Australia, the USA, and Japan, and recording several acclaimed albums.

As a sound engineer and producer, Peter worked with sensitivity and focus, helping to shape hundreds of recordings and live performances. His creative partnership with Tim Arnold spanned over two decades, encompassing albums, tours, and the co-founding of a recording studio at Thamkrabok Monastery in Thailand. There, Peter recorded over 500 songs by traditional Thai musicians — a body of work that captured the soul of a culture he came to love deeply and devoted time and energy to over the years.

Peter’s path was not confined to music alone. In 2002, he ordained as a Buddhist monk at Thamkrabok, dedicating nine years to spiritual study and meditation. His time in the monastery revealed the same dedication he had always given to his art — a quiet, disciplined pursuit of truth and clarity.

Returning to secular life, Peter wove his spiritual insight into his work as a teacher of both English and Thai, and as a guide and mentor to those seeking balance, meaning, and creativity.

Fluent in Thai, a keen chess player, and a man known for his generosity, Peter carried a calm strength that grounded everyone who met him. Whether behind a drum kit, in the recording studio, or within the stillness of a meditation hall, he embodied integrity, curiosity, and compassion.

Peter’s life was a testament to the harmony between art and spirit. He leaves behind not just recordings and lessons, but a legacy of kindness, creativity, and mindful presence that will continue to resonate in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
